Why someone would want a personal wiki depends on your goals. What do you want to do with your wiki? Can be used for Storage. On Internet need a Literary web site? Support for a specific hobby or interest? Sailing? Knitting? Usually it's about convenience for self. Others do not necesssarily edit it. It can be local to one's own computer or shared on line.
A Personal wiki is not a Community wiki.
Sometimes a wiki is not a good choice. Sometimes a simple biz card page is good enough.
Consider it an expanded blog or collection of personal thoughts, information, and research supporting that.
Droopla has a wiki and can grab a group of contacts.
Moin Moin, Ward's wiki, twiki, plone.
SCMS = Specialized Content Management System
There is an Apple widget where no one else can see your wiki.
PIM = Personal Information Manager.
